Mr. Conrad is a former bankruptcy
judge from Vermont. He spent nine years, however, working in the Southern
District of New York, where he
presided over cases such as Drexel Burnham, Ames and other large “mega
cases.” He is known for his quick legal insights, creative legal
interpretations and his accounting and financial acumen.
Since retiring from the bench in 1999, Mr. Conrad has served as a financial
advisor to debtors and official committees of unsecured creditors, as
an examiner, and as an expert in numerous cases, many of which involved
the careful blending of law, accounting, finance and management.
Mr. Conrad
has served as the Chapter 11 trustee in cases in the Southern District
of New York and the Eastern District of New York. Two of these
cases started out as no-asset cases but resulted in a 100% payout to
creditors and partial payment to equity due to a creative application
of real estate law, executory contracts and real estate development.
In addition, Mr. Conrad has served as the examiner in cases in the
Southern District of New York, one of which developed to a mediation
role that
created a framework for a consensual plan of reorganization that will
pay all creditors’ claims in full with interest.
Mr. Conrad has
also served as the Chapter 11 trustee of a company that operated
convenience stores and gas stations in several states. By
becoming involved in running the business immediately after his appointment,
Mr.
Conrad was able to avoid losses and to retain the value of the assets
for later sales. Also, Mr. Conrad was instrumental in greatly reducing
a multi-million dollar claim against the estate and in generating
a significant return for unsecured creditors.
In addition, Mr.
Conrad has served as a mediator in over 60 cases, internationally and
domestically, involving plans of reorganization and other litigated issues.
All of the negotiations involving plans of reorganization resulted in
the reorganization of the debtors and in recoveries for the creditors.
