Mr. Blatchford is a partner
with Jager Smith P.C.’s Litigation Group. He was admitted to the
Massachusetts Bar in 1981 and has been with the firm since 1987. He earned
degrees from Tufts University (A.B. 1977), Hofstra University School of
Law (J.D. 1980) and Boston University School of Law (LL.M. in Banking
and Finance Law, concentration in Securities Regulation,1997).
Mr. Blatchford concentrates in the area of commercial litigation. His
cases typically involve contracts, corporate law, securities, issues arising
under the Uniform Commerical Code, business torts, trusts, real property,
and land use. He also practices with the firm’s Bankruptcy and Creditors’
Rights Group. His trial experience includes jury and jury-waived trials
in the Massachusetts Superior Court, the United States District Court,
and the United States Bankruptcy Court.
Mr. Blatchford has significant experience in the area of appellate practice.
He has briefed and argued appeals before the Supreme Judicial Court of
Massachusetts, the Massachusetts Appeals Court, the United States Courts
of Appeals for the First and Fourth Circuits, and the United States Bankruptcy
Appellate Panel for the First Circuit. He argued before the Supreme Judicial
Court on behalf of the appellant landowners in Chandler v. County Commissioners
of Nantucket, 437 Mass. 430 (2002), in which the Supreme Judicial Court
vacated eminent domain land takings on the island of Nantucket. He also
successfully represented the appellant in Bisson v. Eck, 430 Mass. 406
(1999), in which the Supreme Judicial Court reversed a judgment in a case
of first impression in Massachusetts involving the law of negotiable instruments.
Mr. Blatchford has served as a member of the adjunct faculty at Northeastern
University School of Law, where he has taught a course entitled Commercial
Law: Payment Systems, which covers the law of negotiable instruments,
bank deposits and collections, and electronic funds transfers. He has
taught in Northeastern University’s continuing education program
for several years, and has also lectured before the Boston Bar Association.
He is a member of the American Bar Association (Litigation Section: Appellate
Practice Committee, Council of Appellate Lawyers) (Business Law Section),
Boston Bar Association (Litigation, Business Law and Administration of
Justice Sections) and the Essex County Bar Association. Mr. Blatchford
previously served on the Board of Editors of the Boston Bar Journal, and
was a member of the Zoning Board of Appeals for the City of Gloucester,
Massachusetts.
